Andover bowlers raised an amazing figure of over £3,250 during the Club’s Bowlathon, held recently.
Bowling for the whole 24 hours was club member Bradley Godden, supported by a team of 36 other bowlers each contributing two, four or even six-hour shifts in a continuous triples match of Owls v Larks. A total of 198 ends were bowled, with the final score being 179-136 in favour of Owls.
The money was raised via cash contributions from businesses and individuals from Andover and beyond, and from the proceeds of summer fete-style activities held on and around the bowling green. It will be divided equally between the club, in view of our new clubhouse, and the Countess of Brecknock Hospice.
The mayor of Andover, Cllr. Linda Lashbrook, formally opened the event by bowling the first delivery. After Bradley, by then promoted to skip, had delivered the final bowl of the match – his 594th – he was presented with a commemorative club shirt and cap in recognition of his magnificent effort in extremely hot weather.
President Steve Baker, who – along with Meg Baker and Val Carnegie – had been present throughout the whole 24 hours, thanked Bradley for his fantastic achievement, and everyone for the contributions and the efforts made in organising, delivering and sustaining the event. ‘I’m bowled over by people’s generosity,’ said Steve. ‘There is a wonderful community at the heart of this club and it shows what we can do when we all come together.’
Stepping off the green, Bradley said, ‘I’m completely shattered! But so proud to have been involved and so grateful for the support of everyone who turned out to bowl or cheer us on. This club has been a second home for me and everyone has welcomed me with open arms. The people are unbelievable – thank you!’
Vice-President Tony Guy, who had taken a 10pm-4am slot during the Bowlathon, then took a team of bowlers, including five new faces, to Thatcham for a friendly. Bowling throughout the afternoon in 30 degree heat, Andover won four of the six rinks, prevailing against a strong Thatcham side by 107-67.
